The design aimed to capture the authentic reality of the rural area by reusing, revitalizing and relocating entire buildings (previously abandoned or condemned) to the site as its indoor spaces for storage, facilities and gathering space. in between these spaces, a lightweight frame was installed to create an-indoor outdoor market that could be partially opened in the summer and fully sealed in the winter for passive heating and cooling. the facade was designed as both inflatable and stretched ETFE double membrane panels to emphasize the focus on the future of rural living and the idea that the facade would breathe like a living entity or city.
Tying our studio project to a real local site and brief meant that I actually got to engage with our client and work volunteer shifts at the food pantry we were designing a new building for. Talking with users and patrons, the design became a proposal for a rural community center as well as food pantry that would hopefully revitalize rural practices, pass down knowledge on farming to the next generation, and aspirationally combat large corporation buyouts of Farmland.
